Fresh Flags

Methodology: This study surveyed 3,016 U.S. adults in July 2026 to explore how Americans would redesign their state flags if given the opportunity. Rather than choosing traditional state symbols or historical emblems, respondents were asked to select the modern, humorous or everyday object they felt best represents their state today. Options reflected contemporary aspects of local identity, including food, traffic, weather, sports, popular culture, regional habits, and shared experiences that residents commonly associate with home. Responses were aggregated to identify the most popular alternative symbol for each state, which was then used to create a series of hypothetical flag redesigns. Demographic quotas and weighting were applied where appropriate to ensure the sample was broadly representative of the U.S. adult population by age, gender, and region.
